Dissipator Shines in LED Production PDF Print E-mail

Hernon Manufacturing's Dissipator 745 was recently tested against a competitor's thermal pad product in the production of LED lighting by a large manufacturer. The results were positive on all fronts including operating temperatures 6° to 7° Celsius degrees lower. Temperatures as in most electronics are important for increasing the product longevity. In the case of LED lighting it also can yield higher light emission. Hernon Dissipator 745 was able to increase life by 15 to 20% and increase light emission by 5% using the same electrical power input. Another important consideration is that Dissipator 745 in this application was able to lower costs by a multiple of 4 to 5 times.

Hernon Dissipator 745 is a thermally conductive, acrylic adhesive with self-leveling properties. This room-temperature cure adhesive provides up to 1000 psi of shear strength while delivering a coefficient of thermal conductivity of 69 x 10-6 according to ASTM D696 testing. Dissipator 745 is a no-mix application. No need to worry about proper mixing ratios of two-component products and elaborate dispensing pump systems. An activator is applied to one surface and Dissipator 745 is applied to the opposite. Once the components are mated the adhesive cures to a constant gap of 0.005 to 0.006 inch gap. Handling strength is achieved in just 5 minutes with full strength available in 4 to 24 hours at standard room temperature. Dissipator 745 also provides high dielectric strength to 26.7 kV/mm according testing standard IEC 60243-1. It is also resistant to thermal cycling which critical in this LED application.

Motorcycle Manufacturer Sealing Wiring with HPS 1200 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

A cruising motorcycle manufacturer has begun using Hernon Porosity Sealant 1200 to seal wiring assemblies. This manufacturer has realized that they can extend the life of their wiring systems using HPS 1200. This is especially critical in the vibration and moisture prone environment of a motorcycle.

Hernon Porosity Sealant 1200 is a low-viscosity liquid sealant designed for sealing interfacial leak paths in flexible wiring assemblies. This sealant greatly extends the life of the wiring protecting it against penetrating moisture. HPS 1200 also enhances the dielectric strength of the assembly.

HPS 1200 is typically applied by applying a vacuum to the wiring. This causes the sealant to rush in to fill any voids. Absent of circulating air, HPS 1200 cures to become a tough and flexible polymer. It permanently seals gaps, but still allows for the wire structure to remain pliable. To finish the process excess uncured sealant is rinsed from the wiring, which eliminates any surface buildup. Parts remain cosmetically and dimensionally unchanged.

Typical applications include sealing or unitizing over molded electrical components and wiring against the penetration of water, air, coolants, oil, and other fluids. HPS 1200 will also increase the dielectric strength between conductors for high voltage applications. This reduces chances of dangerous arcing.

HPS 1200 will also increase the longevity of wiring assemblies. Over time plastic shrinks slightly, which opens microscopic gaps around pins and inserts. The plastic can also crack due to vibration and exposure to environmental elements. HPS 1200 can extend the life of a wiring assembly by providing further protection beyond the plastic insulation.

NSF Listing of Hernon Self Seeler Sealants PDF Print E-mail

NSFHernon is proud to announce that our Self Seeler grades 604, 615, 616, and 618 are now certified to ANSI/NSF Standard 61. This standard indicates that these products have been certified for usage on commercial and residential potable water system components up to 82°C (180°F).

Hernon Self Seeler 604Hernon's line of Self Seeler products are tough, pre-applied sealants for threaded pipe components. Self Seeler is non-hardening which means that it instantly seals but it can be adjusted and even removed and reinstalled up to 8 times without recoating the threads. Self Seeler is water-based and non-toxic, which allows for safe handling without special precautions. It can also prevent loosening due to vibration because of prevailing torque characteristics.

The pre-applied application of Self Seeler sealants means that the sealant can be applied to threaded components up to 4 years before use. This eliminates application on the assembly line, which can reduce concerns about installation and migration problems. Self Seeler also holds the advantage for field assembly because the parts are always properly coated and ready for installation. Self Seeler can be applied with semi-automatic or automatic applicators such the Hernon AutoCoater 3010.

ULSelf Seeler grades 604, 615, 616, and 618 are also classified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. for use with gasoline, petroleum oils, natural gas (up to 300 psig), propane, and butane. (Reference UL File Number MH14222)

These certifications and the pre-applied method of application allow Self Seeler sealants to be used in a wide-variety of applications.

Silkscreen Application of Gasket Replacer PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:55
Most are familiar with the manual application of flange sealant as pictured here. There is a low-cost and much more effective method for applying flange sealant such as Hernon Gasket Replacer in production applications.

Silkscreen Application Method
The video below gives a quick step-by-step overview of using a silkscreen to apply flange sealant. Here are the elaborated steps:
  1. Create a silkscreen with the gasket face design etched into it. Hernon’s engineering staff can assist you with creating the silkscreen as well as a fixture. The fixture is important to increase the speed of setting the component for silkscreening, and it guarantees a perfect application every time.
  2. Apply a generous bead of Hernon Gasket Replacer to one end of the frame.
  3. Use a Hernon provided wiper to apply the sealant to the screen. Do not worry about the time needed to spread the Gasket Replacer. The anaerobic cure mechanism will not activate until the parts are mated.
  4. Wipe off excess sealant.
  5. Remove the screen and mate the components of the assembly
Hernon does provide a wide-variety of Gasket Replacer sealants for various metal substrates and operating environments. These anaerobic sealants cure in the absence of air, and they are formulated so that excess material harmlessly dissipates in the system. Advantages over precut gaskets include no shrink, rot, displacement, distortion, or relax. Flanges sealed with Gasket Replacer never need to be re-torqued.

About the application
The assembly being sealed is a cooler manifold for large LCD monitors in world-class racing yachts. Liquid coolant is pumped through the LCD and then into this radiator to dissipate the heat. Sealing the two halves of the manifold is critical for the application, which is why this company chose Hernon Gasket Replacer 916 anaerobic flange sealant and Hernon EF® Primer 50.
