Hernon Introduces ReAct™ Structural Adhesive for a Wide Variety of Substrates

Hernon has taken the excellent bond strength of Fusionbond™ structural adhesive and merged it with the simplicity of the ReAct™ two-component, no-mix curing system to create ReAct™ 784. ReAct™ 784 is a structural adhesive designed for a wide variety of substrates with strong bond strength and rapid fixture rates. The two-component, no-mix system allows controlled assembly timing ideal for production and repair applications.

ReAct™ 784 is ideal for bonding a wide-variety of substrates including steel, aluminum, phenolic, PVC, ABS, polycarbonate, and glass. Shear strength ranges from 400 to more than 4800 PSI on various substrates. ReAct™ demonstrates good resistance to moisture as well as chemicals such as motor oil, gasoline, and water/glycol. Temperature resistance is up to 135° Celsius (275° Fahrenheit).

ReAct™ 784 uses EF™ Activator 15 to create a simple two-component, no-mix bonding system. The operator applies EF™ Activator 15 to one bonding surface and the ReAct™ 784 to the opposite surface. The parts can then be mated instantly. As needed, the EF™ Activator 15 can be applied up to two hours prior to bonding the substrates. This unique system eliminates the need for mixing systems, curing equipment, inaccurate mix ratios, or wasted adhesive.

Since the invention of the screw by Pythagorean philosopher Archytas of Tarentum in the 5th Century BC, designers have searched for methods to “lock” threaded fasteners. Lock washers and other apparatus have been used, but they present their own unique problems. Liquid thread locking adhesives became the eventual solution for this age-old problem.

Threaded fasteners such as nuts and bolts loosen due to vibration, without some method of locking the threads. A cut-away side view of a threaded assembly will reveal a very small area of contact between the threads. The friction of this small mating area is being asked to stand up against vibration and shock to hold the assembly together. As all designers have experienced, this can be a common point of failure in assemblies that must endure vibration and shock. Hernon Nuts N’ Bolts™ threadlockers correct this problem by filling the gaps with anaerobic adhesive.

Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of oxygen and with the assistance of the iononic activity of the metal fasteners. Nuts N’ Bolts™ adhesives cure to become a hard plastic that fills the voids and increases the surface area between the mated threads. Nuts N’ Bolts anaerobic adhesives are the best choice for locking metal threaded fasteners, versus using epoxies or other types of adhesives. For plastic fasteners, Hernon does offer a specially formulated version of Nuts N’ Bolts™ for this application. Using anaerobic adhesives on plastic components will typically result in damage to the plastic substrate. Many different designs of split and lock washers have been presented to secure threaded fasteners. These devices are only increasing the resistance between the threads without increasing the thread engagement area and do not offer controlled prevailing and breakaway torques that adhesives offer. From an economical standpoint, they are also more expensive and different sizes must be stocked for each different threaded fastener. Just a couple of different grades of Nuts N’ Bolts™ in inventory will suffice to lock and seal nearly any size or type of threaded fastener. Another large advantage of Nuts N’ Bolts™ over mechanical methods is that Nuts N’ Bolts™ seals threaded components, which lowers the prospects of rust “permanently” locking threaded fasteners.

Hernon does offer a broad range of Nuts N’ Bolts™ adhesives to fit different types of applications and sizes of fasteners. Each offers a unique combination of prevailing and breakaway torque values on a standard 3/8-16 inch phosphate steel nut and bolt. Each grade also differs in cure time, viscosity, and more.
